The consequences of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Though scientists have not yet identified what causes chronic fatigue syndrome, studies have indicated that it can lead to serious health issues. Not only does fatigue affect the ability to make rational decisions, memory and concentration, it can also upset the hormonal process of your system and protein level as well as insulin production.

According to the Center for Disease Control, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome can be misdiagnosed or overlooked because its symptoms are similar to so many other illnesses. Fatigue, for instance, can be a symptom for hundreds of illnesses. Looking closer at the nature of the symptoms though, can help a doctor distinguish CFS from other illnesses.

Most studies found that the majority of CFS patients experience some form of problems with sleep. Most CFS patients experience non-restorative sleep as compared to their pre-illness experience.Patients should be advised to practice standard sleep hygiene techniques. CDC suggests the following:

· schedule regular sleep and wake times – try to get up at the same time everyday

· establish a regular bedtime routine, which may include a warm bath or shower, or listening to soothing music

· avoid napping during the day

· use the bedroom only for sleep and sex; not for other activities such as watching TV, reading, or working on a computer

· control noise, light and temperature in the bedroom

· avoid caffeine within 6 hours of bedtime, and alcohol and tobacco within 2 hours of bedtime

· avoid chocolate and green teas in the evening

· light exercise and stretching earlier in the day, at least four hours before bedtime, may also improve sleep.

· Use an organizer and scheduler for memory improvement

Also recognize that “stress is a stimulant”, Dr. Carlson comments from Harvard Medical School. Learning to schedule a time to wind down, before bed, is essential in managing fatigue. Winding down refers to relaxation exercises, quiet time, deep breathing and doing what it takes to remove yourself from the mind of daytime worries.

You may also de-clutter your mind by writing in a journal of what you have accomplished and what you want to tackle the next day. Many studies have proven that to do lists do work because they release your mind so that you can have more quality sleep and focus. Some comment that if they stop their lists due to a change in lifestyle, job or event, it depletes their memory,organization and focus.  Learn meditation to also rejuvenate mental capabilities

The important factor, overall, for any fatigue sufferers is balance in home, work and relationships; knowing what is important to you to lead a better life and avoid suffering. Only your heart knows what you can handle. Those that question fatigue tend to add even more responsibility and pretend that they are infallible. Know your boundaries and prepare for a more healthy life’s journey.
